I Lay Under the Birch Tree
Lying on the ground, under the tall Birch tree
I stared up at the leaves,
I took in her majesty
I closed my eyes,
Looked deeply, quietly
“Teach me, oh great one,
I’m here to learn, teach me.”
I come to her on the wind
“Give me guidance, show me where to begin.”
She comes to me in the breeze
Whispering softly,
Teaching the language of the trees
She says,
“To live you must die, to laugh you must cry,
To welcome your joy, simply welcome your pain.
When you stand in the sun, remember to dance in the rain.”
She tells me her stories,
She’s first to grow on charred land,
And like phoenix from ashes,
Her life begins again.
She says,
“The message, my dear,
If it’s not perfectly clear,
What you’ve been searching for,
The chance to be reborn,
Just like me, resurrected,
New life, protected
By nature’s seasons,
By your soul’s true reason.”
I came to Birch, through the wind,
Thanked her for the guidance,
I now know where to begin.
She now always comes to me in the breeze,
We whisper softly, we share the language of the trees.
We speak of great wisdom,
Shining light on all that’s within.
We dance in my shadows,
We laugh at what I don’t yet know.
To soothe my heart she brings views from above,
It is through her that I learn new ways to love.
In this life I’ve died a million times,
In this life I’ve lived a million lives.
Through the breeze, I hear her words:
“Remember, remember, all that you’ve learned.
Though not in your mind,
It’s the remembrance of a different kind,
It’s deep within your body,
Like it’s in my branches and leaves.
It holds all your soul’s learned,
All the lessons of this earth.”
So when I feel I’ve lost my way,
No matter the day,
I lay my body, mind, soul down
Under the Birch tree, on her ground
I close my eyes, and I breathe
I say, “Oh great teacher, please, teach me, teach me, teach me.”
And to me she speaks, yet again.
